In addition to our public calls, Pioneer Science cultivates exceptional research projects aligned with our core interests: molecular and cellular biology, the physics and mathematics of biology, and neuroscience and cognition. These innovative, high-impact projects are carried out in our laboratories or in collaboration with partner institutions.
These projects receive comprehensive support, including grants for researchers, funding for essential supplies and equipment, and financial support for publication in scientific journals.
Discretionary projects are not selected through an open call for proposals. Instead, they are carefully selected by the Executive Committee of Pioneer Science.
Currently, we are supporting projects in two areas:
Quantum biology lies at the intersection of biology (the study of life) and quantum physics (the study of phenomena at the atomic and subatomic levels, i.e., on a scale smaller than the atom, such as electrons, protons, and photons). This emerging field promises to generate groundbreaking knowledge with broad applications. Pioneer Science is currently supporting two projects in quantum biology:
Light is a constant presence in our daily experience. But are we aware of its quantum properties? This collaborative project with UFRJ, UFMG, and IDOR investigates the human ability to perceive quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement in quantum images. The research explores how quantum light can influence behavior and conscious experience.

The interdisciplinary nature of quantum biology attracts students and researchers from many different fields. Pioneer Science supports the QBio Community to foster a dynamic environment for collaboration and knowledge sharing. This group of scientists engages in ongoing discussions about quantum biology and hosts webinars to explore the latest advances. Explore the first two editions of the webinar series here.

This field studies how beliefs are formed, maintained, and modified and their impact on human behavior and well-being. Pioneer Science supports a dedicated lab focused on this critical area of research.
