There are moments in the history of science that revolutionize human knowledge, redefine paradigms, and propel society toward new horizons. Emblematic examples of what is called “frontier science” include the discovery of the structure of DNA, the formulation of the general theory of relativity, and the identification of radioactivity. “These are extraordinary advances that promote leaps in understanding and revolutions in knowledge, redefining our perception of the world,” highlights Sergio Ferreira.

In an interview with journalist Letícia Mori from BBC Brasil, Ferreira addressed the importance of fostering “maverick science,” defined as bold research that challenges dogmas and expands the limits of knowledge. He pointed out that both academia and the private sector prioritize projects with predictable results, leaving little room for unconventional ideas.

Ferreira highlights the calls for proposals from Pioneer Science as an example of encouragement for innovative science. The initiative seeks to provide financial support and creative freedom to young scientists willing to take risks and explore unknown territories, with a special focus on the frontier areas between biology and exact sciences. “Our goal is to create an environment where maverick scientists can dare, challenge paradigms, and transform science,” he stated.

The initiative already supports researchers such as biologist Ivan Domith, who studies coffee compounds in the health area, and physicist Alice Marques, who investigates the fundamentals of quantum mechanics. The most recent call for proposals will grant R$ 160,000 annually for three years to young doctors, reinforcing Pioneer Science’s commitment to stimulating transformative advances.
