Experiências não-ordinárias (NOEs), como ouvir vozes, ter experiências dissociativas ou sentimentos de insight profundo, são relativamente comuns na população em geral, mas às vezes estão associadas à diminuição da qualidade de vida e da saúde mental. As interpretações médicas de tais experiências fazem uso de rótulos psiquiátricos, enquanto as interpretações espirituais têm a possibilidade de oferecer um caminho para o empoderamento e a inclusão social. A maneira como os indivíduos avaliam essas experiências pode ter um impacto de longo prazo em suas vidas. Uma melhor compreensão da diversidade de NOEs e suas avaliações, juntamente com os estados psicológicos e fisiológicos que os acompanham são cruciais para ajudar as pessoas a entenderem melhor as NOEs e permitir que elas “possuam” tais experiências sem impacto negativo na saúde.
